The standard we build to
This website is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. That is the standard referenced by Americans with Disabilities Act guidance and by Section 508.
Accessibility is not a one-time task. We check it when we change the site, and we would rather hear about a problem than have someone quietly give up on the page.
What we have checked
This site was tested with axe-core against the WCAG 2.1 A and AA rule sets, across seven representative pages at both desktop and mobile widths. One issue was found, a breadcrumb link that relied on colour alone to stand out from the text around it, and it was corrected. The specific things that test covers include:
- Text and background colour pairs meeting the WCAG AA contrast minimum.
- Images carrying alternative text, with decorative images marked so screen readers skip them.
- Headings running in order so the document outline is navigable.
- Form fields having real labels tied to their inputs.
- Landmarks marked up so assistive technology can jump between regions.
- Links being distinguishable without relying on colour alone.
- The page working at small screen widths without horizontal scrolling.
Known limits
Automated testing catches a useful share of accessibility problems but not all of them. Things like whether alternative text actually describes the right thing, or whether a page makes sense read aloud start to finish, need a person. If you hit something that does not work, it is a defect and we want to know.
